Nobles vs. Serfs
The ultimate showdown.
In the Elizabethan Era, there were two main differences between the people. The classes were the Nobles, which were the upper class, and the serfs, which were the lower class. The nobles were one class down from the king and had jobs like being officials, tax collectors or clergymen. Serfs were peasants that farmed their lord’s land and lived in tiny villages on that land. Serfs were basically tied in with the land and they couldn't leave the premises unless they had gotten permission from their master. They were basically the slaves of the Elizabethan Era. In exchange for the serfs’ work the lord would grant them use of their land to rent, and in return for the lords’ work the king of the land gave them a manor on their estates where they were to live.
Nobles and serfs relate to the book Romeo and Juliet due to the use of belittling others who weren't on the same social level. The Montagues and Capulets were the nobles, and the story line stayed at the noble level up until the part about the city of lepers called Mantua.
