Entertainment of the Elizabethan Era...
Entertainment in the Elizabethan era was clean and very important to the people who lived in this time period. The lives of those in this period were very hard due to the constant outbreak of the Bubonic plague. Entertainment let them forget about their troubles and have a good time.
People of the Elizabethan time period enjoyed themselves by doing some of the following activities:
Feasts
Banquets
Fairs
Plays
Mystery Plays - Re-enacting stories from the Bible
Festivals Dancing
Jousts / Tournaments
Games and Sports - which included archery, bowling, playing cards, dice, hammer-throwing, and wrestling
Animal Sports - Including bear, and bull baiting, dog and cock (chicken) fighting
Hunting
Hawking
Since poor people couldn't afford to see gaming by the big name sports players they enjoyed their past times by seeing the following:
Acting troupes
Tournaments
Dancing
Trained animals
Dancers
Mystery plays
Jugglers
Strolling players
All the ones listed above were what the less fortunate watched.
Notice how theater isn't listed in what the upper class people did in their free time. This is due to the fact that many prostitutes and other people of sketchy backgrounds hung out.
There were nine public theaters built in the city limits outside of London. The three most significant ones were the Globe Theatre, The Fortune, and The Swan.
The actors in the plays were only men due to the fact that the ladies of the lower class were prostitutes. There was also male supremacy.
The entertainment relates to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet because the Capulets had a feast before the celebration of Juliet and Paris' wedding day.
